David Popov: a personal account of the world

David Popov is a graphic designer. Not only professionaly, he also has his own personal graphic projects that represent his experiences. In the 'Round the World' series, he's created his own account of his travels throughout the world. From Amsterdam, to Cambodia, to Barcelona. The places he has been inspire him to create his own graphic designs, his own art.

Most people bring home photo's of their travels, graphic designers are no exception. But those photo's are often not very special or personal. How many pictures of white sandy beaches, or popular monuments have you seen? A lot probably. To David, making his own graphic designs inspired by the travels show more of what he gained during his travels than the photo's we already know. 'Round the World' is an abstract document of experiences, of feelings, of places. Of anything really. He takes notes of his trips and photo's of textiles and patterns he sees, and once home he he starts a self-reflective project. The abstraction of the posters let David communicate as much or as little as he wants.

The Barcelona poster for example is clearly inspired by Guadi, but also by the Barcelona-Madrid football match he saw, getting lost, and the colors and textures he saw on local foods. In the Amsterdam poster the purple was inspired by the purple blinds in the hotel he stayed in, keeping them closed as the view of the Red Light District was a bit depressing. The circles represent the islands Amsterdam is essentially built on. The green poster representing Cambodia reflects the growth of a new country, of something that was once destroyed.
