Birds are curious creatures

Photographer Zoë Maxwell is curious. Her work is about curiosity in the world. She loves photography for it's ability to let you do something with your curiosity, it lets you escape. Many of her photos are quite dreamy, she loved to read as a child and create visuals of the stories in her own mind. Some of her work can be seen the Photofusion gallery in London until November 9th.

Back to the curiosity. What do birds have to do with that? And what do colors have to do with that? She intended to do a series of photos with birds as if they were human sitters. She had visited a falconry several times to learn about the birds and to choose several for the 'portrait' images. Zoë created backdrops based on the colors of the birds, to complement the bird's feathers. The photo shoot was done outside with the birds facing the camera, until.... until they caught the backdrop in the corner of their eye (birds have good peripheral vision). Apparently the backdrops distracted the birds. Curious of what the colored screen behind them was, the birds would turn around and look at the backdrop, not the camera. Zoë let it be, and let the birds be curious. Just like humans are.
